History of Haflingers in Australia

The Dalgety Land Company purchased the Haflinger Stallion Narrogal, 5 mares Ditha, Liebkind, Morena, Orsi and Siena as well as 2 fillies Elflein and Gaby from Austria. Two of the mares Morena and Siena were bred in Austria and gave birth to the fillies Merinda and Sorena in quarantine in England en route to Australia.
 
While the mares were in England they were bred to Haflinger stallions there in the hope of getting another male line in Australia , which unfortunately did not eventuate. All the horses arrived safely in Australia and after quarantine in Adelaide; they were then taken to the Dalgety property Yammatree near Cootamundra in 1974.

In 1979 the Dalgety Company decided to sell all the horses at an auction at Bibaringa Stud in Canberra. By 1981 it was apparent that there was a need for another male bloodline in Australia so the stallion Admiral was imported from Holland. This was also the case in 1988 when Wintersun was imported from Austria. The cost of importing horses from overseas was high that it was decided, in to import frozen semen from Haflinger Stallions in England. This took place for the first time in 1994 from the Austrian born stallion Alpine and later in 2000 from the stallion Marlon.

The Australian Haflinger Horse Breeders Association is a member of the World Haflinger Federation and keeps all registration details and publishes a Studbook each year for horses in Australia and New Zealand.

In July 2007 there were over 250 Haflinger horses in Australia and New Zealand, including over 100 currently registered and classified stallions, mares and geldings.
